The idea of a smart city is usually related to technology, a place with 5G internet connection and digital access to everyone. However, the concept involves much more than that. To achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined by the United Nations (UN), it is essential to move forward and turn the cities into a reference in sustainable development in order to create conscious cities.

In João Silvério’s view, lead partner of Business Consulting at Grant Thornton Brazil, cities need to be aware of their orientation, vocation and the identity of their citizens, understanding the region in which they are located and what they represent in a broader context. “Cities recognized with tourist potential, for example, that do not have adequate infrastructure such as a hotel or identification and dissemination of tourist attractions are not aware of their role and are not preparing to play it. As a result, they end up not developing as they should.”

Long-term planning to create conscious cities

This awareness of its potential and capabilities cause the city to assume its role and be recognized regionally. The challenge ahead is to create plans that last beyond government changes.

“If the project is carried out for four years and changes as the public managers take turns, this doesn't work. Having a long-term sustainable development plan properly discussed with society is essential for cities to have effective planning,” Silvério reinforces.

In this regard, structuring a strategic plan based on vocations and aligned with sustainable development, with multidisciplinary teams and customized projects is an asset. It is possible to develop work that facilitate the understanding of this positioning, defining together the growth axes. In tourism, for example, what is needed to grow in the industry: to have more hotels? Workforce training? In the industrial area, it is important to understand the demands of human capital and how to prepare them. In the development axes, support can be promoted comprehensively as it deals with the legal framework for sanitation, sustainable energy alternatives, urban mobility, among other aspects.

“In many cases we are able to form public-private partnerships that help meet the demands of the municipality. In this work, we seek to help the city become aware of its full potential and project its long-term growth,” he concludes.
